Are You

  • Interested in local food?
  • Concerned about food miles?
  • Keen to support local food producers?
  • Interested in becoming one yourself?

We formed in Autumn 2009, in response to the 92% of local people who said,in the 2009 Village Survey, that they’d like to eat more locally produced food. We know that lots of Blackshaw folk are already involved in buying, sharing, exchanging, growing and supporting local producers. Through this group we want to support and encourage the local food links that already exist, and to find new ways for local people to help each other to achieve their dream of eating and buying local food as much as possible. We recognise that this idea is not new: people up and down the country are inspired to ‘grow their own’, to reduce food miles and improve food quality. Just down the road in Todmorden Incredible Edible has developed guerrilla gardening, Every Egg Matters and even an aquaculture project! We are high in the Pennines so opportunities for larger scale vegetable growing are limited but there’s lots of other possibilities – like Dan Tasker’s beer brewing, rearing animals and processing real locally made food. We want to include more people, get them excited about the venture, it may mean changes in the ways we eat, shop and do things but to get active in becoming independent and creative. We want to increase our personal links in the area we live in and we want to develop our skills in growing, selling, etc.

At our meeting in October 2009 we made some plans:

  • To set up a directory of WHO will have WHAT to SELL
  • To have a stall at the village fete to promote our project (with food tasting opportunities)
  • To visit Swillington Farm near Leeds, which runs community supported agriculture schemes in vegetables and meat
  • To have our project included on the Blackshaw website
  • And much more besides…..
